Fairy Tale Plays!

Room 3 have worked so hard writing scripts last week and getting ready for parents to come in and watch us. It took a lot of work to working together, listening to everyone's ideas and deciding what will go in the plays and how to act them.

Progress Report on Candy House...

Room 3 has been a little bit messy while the house has been painted....there is going to be some serious scrubbing and cleaning of the carpet where the newspaper has not quite done the required job!
However, the paint job is looking pretty cool and there has been fantastic group work - lots of sharing ideas, listening to others and negotiating!

FAIRYTALES - Brainstorming, designing and GROUPWORK!

Hello! Today Room 3 have begun making a gingerbread house. We are working in groups, listening to each other's ideas and coming up with ways to decorate our house. This is of course part of the Grimm Fairytale Unit.

Solar System Update

Room 3 are now very busy researching the Solar System.
We are using reference books, encylopedias, teacher resources, posters, information kits and of course the VAST amount of information on the internet.

We got some basic information from that awesome Solar System song on YouTube...and now we are expanding on that but it takes time. We're finding out that research has its problems and you end up looking up a lot of stuff you don't need. Despite that you find out some real cool things.

A few comments...
"I have spend ages reading this old book and only got a few facts from it" - Jack
"Did you know that Mars has a crater 7km long?" - Carlin
"My computer has the wheel of death, what do I do?" - Haoni
"Ms Betts - guess what?" - various voices at one!

The Mighty Maths Rescue!

We're going on a bear hunt but we're not scared...
Uh-oh, now the bear hunters are lost and the search and rescue guys have to find the family silly enough to go into a bear cave.
What can the rescuers use to find the cave and lost family? They know they have paddocks, wheat fields, mud, rivers and snowy mountains to navigate but which way should they go?

MAPS!  MAPS! MAPS! MAPS! MAPS! MAPS! MAPS!

Room 3 spent all of Thursday learning about Position and Orientation.
Maths strand - Geometry
  • We talked about where North, East, South and West is
  • We worked out what is between the North and East - (NE) etc
  • We talked about degrees - is it 90 degrees between North and East? If you were standing at North and moved 180 degrees where would you be? The boys talked about doing 360's!
  • We tried to work out what directions we would go if we went from Christchurch to Greymouth then Greymouth to Nelson, then Nelson to Dunedin. Luckily we had maps or some of us would have drowned!
  • We realised how important it is to have maps, and co-ordinates on them, and the NESW symbol
Maps were made for the Rescuers, and directions on how to get to the bear cave. Trial runs were made to make sure the maps did in fact work!

Harold's Message about Healthy Food

Wow - in two sessions with Harold, (and Rachel), Room 3 have learnt so much about healthy food and how our bodies process food.
Did you know...

  • We should eat lots of things from the ground like fruit and vegetables and grains
  • We should eat some things from animals like meat, eggs, milk and cheese
  • We should eat little of processed food, or food with lots of ingredients

  • You should look at the 3 main ingredients in food to work out if it's healthy
  • If there is more sugar than anything else, then its not that healthy and you should just have a little bit e.g. chocolate!

Some questions we all should be able to answer...
  1. Name some body parts that are part of the digestive system?
  2. What do the stomach and small intestines do?
  3. The 3 things we need to be careful about putting into our bodies?
  4. The 3 main places that food come from?
  5. Who is the best giraffe in the world?
REMEMBER  - Get fit and stay Healthy!

The Recorder - a progress report!

Room 3 are learning the Recorder. We have found out that:

  • You hold the recorder in your LEFT hand - so your LEFT thumb covers the hole at the back and your index finger covers the first hole in the front to make B
  • Everybody learns at a different pace. Some kids in the class find it easy but others find it very hard to cover the holes up properly
  • There is a lot to remember while playing - sitting up straight, holding the recorder correctly, reading the music, keeping time...
Can you work out what we are playing? A hint - it is something to do with Easter!

Hmm...we can only get better! Look out for the next update!

Room 3 Mihi

As well as doing fun science experiements Mrs Gray also taught Room 3 their mihi. It was very tricky for most of us, and a lot of practise went into getting to the stage we could present our individual mihi to the class. Room 3 bravely let Ms Betts video them...we hope you enjoy!

Science Fun - Moving Milk and Skittle Magic!

It was Science Week in Term 2, Week 3, so Mrs Gray organised some fun experiemnts for the class to carry out.

MOVING MILK!

The drops of food colouring were put in the milk.

The cotton buds were first dipped into dish washing liquid.

The  moving milk spread the food colouring and made AWESOME patterns.

It was not what we expected to happen!

SKITTLE MAGIC!

Everyone had fun choosing and arranging their skittles!

A little hot water was added...

The coolest patterns began to emerge.

Room 3 had a lot of predictions but after the experiment they had a lot more to say - the results were surprising and exciting!

The Solar System

Before we start to learn about the solar system we each recorded one thing that we already know...
